Why Reduce, Reuse and Recycle?
It makes financial and environmental common sense!
All of the municipal garbage collected by your municipalities in the Bow Valley must be shipped to Calgary area landfills. This is expensive and costs are scheduled to increase dramatically in the near future. It is already cheaper in the Bow Valley to pay for the shipping of recyclables than it is to ship and dispose of waste as unsorted garbage.
In addition, by practicing the 3 Rs, we can reduce our consumption of energy, which can also reduce our greenhouse gas emissions. Although greenhouse gases are a natural part of the earth’s atmosphere, trapping the sun’s warmth and maintaining a surface temperature necessary to sustain life, human actions such as the burning of fossil fuels (coal, oil and natural gas) increase these concentrations of greenhouse gases (carbon dioxide, methane, nitrous oxide, water vapour) potentially affecting the global climate. Whenever we save energy or use it more efficiently, we reduce our demand on fossil fuels and save them for a better use. Less burning of these fuels also means fewer greenhouse gas emissions, lower concentrations, and less potential impact on climate change.
